Is it a bad thing the Scout Shop knows me by name?Well, I took my boys with me today to the Scout Shop to get a few things.  We do try to keep it to a few things per visit or at least we try.  I guess the Scout Shop is to me like the Candy Store is to my sons, please don't tell my wife.  Just joking about that.Today's trip to the Scout Shop...[More]

One year when I was on Summer Camp staff I was the main person teaching the Totin' chit at camp. I even got to the point where I was being asked by Scoutmasters to come to there camp and put on the course for their whole Troop. During one of the normal classes in the Outdoor Skills area I was trying to teach this one Scout how to properly do the blood circle. The lad...[More]

This may sound weird on the surface but its actually really good... Take the normal ingredients for trail mix for example: nuts, cheerios, dried fruit, raisins, chex mix, etc. Mix together in a large bowl like normal, but also mix in butterscotch chips like you would use to make cookies. I usually don't add in any other sugary items to the mix besides the butterscotch -they are sweet enough. Sub divide it up into ziplock...[More]

I know sometimes it is way to easy for the parents to drop the boys off at the Den meeting and have them say "Don't worry we will be back in time" just to find they are a half an hour late.  We as the Adult Leaders need to train and engage the parents so they stay and we don't get frustrated and turned into babysitters.First, we need to train them from their son's first...[More]

When I was still a Scout we were on a backpacking trip. It was a windy, but clear day. The ground was all solid rock, it was just the way this location was... one big slab of rock. When it came time to set up camp we Scouts needed to stake down our tents, because of the wind, but the backpacking tent stakes would just bend when you tried to put them into the ground....[More]

I recently went on a day trip with a friend to Kingman AZ. We drove down parts of the original route 66, visit a museum about the old historic road and just had a grand time. What follows is some photos I took during the trip. Hope you enjoy. The historic route 66 sign outside of the route 66 museum  This is me on a old steam / coal powered train that was on display in a...[More]

Remember it is all about the boys and it maybe to easy to say Yes all the time.  Sometimes we may get in over our heads and it is always good to have others who can take some of the load.  It is way to easy to get burned out.I almost ran into the burn out wall, but caught or hopefully caught myself before I hit it.  I had to remember that if I burn...[More]

I almost feel like I am wasting this blog post, but its my blog and my post so I guess I have the right to waste it if I want ;).I was just looking at my newsletter stats and realized that there are now over 895 subscribers – which is just so amazing to me. I take it as a sign that I must be doing something right and many of you find the newsletter...[More]

As a Scout I backpacked the Grand Canyon twice. The first time we did it was my first long term, and my first serious backpacking trip. As a side note, the hike down only takes 4 to 5 hours, but the hike out takes 8 to 12 hours depending on your condition and the trail you choose. On our way down the Scout who happened to be my tent mate kept dropping his sleeping bag....[More]

Lets take a moment to talk about what written resources are available to you. In the photo you will see there are a lot of books, Scouting and non Scouting ones. There are also maps, trail guides, books created for special trainings and events such as WoodBadge. In addition to all of this there are handouts, flyers from places you visit, posters, informational booklets you collect from fairs and shows, and so much more. Many years...[More]
