Brer Possum

Location? Where else but in the woods? A cast of 4 is needed for this one. Brer Possum, Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear. When the skit starts, Brer Fox and Brer Bear are out of sight. Brer Possum is sitting by the campfire, as Brer Rabbit strolls (hops?) by.

Brer Rabbit: Hi there, Brer Possum, it’s a great day to be out in the woods.

Brer Possum: Sure is. I really enjoy these days.

Brer Rabbit: I would too, but I just can’t seem to get my mind off Brer Fox. You never can tell when he's gonna show up.

Brer Possum: Oh, I never worry about him. He’s just a big bully. And I know a trick that fools him every time.

At this point, Brer Fox begins to enter the area, calling out before he comes into view,

Brer Fox: Hello! Is that Brer Rabbit and Brer Possum I hear? I’ve been looking all over for you. I was just thinking of having you over for dinner.

Brer Rabbit: (to Brer Possum) Oh-oh! Here comes Brer Fox now. Don’t you think we ought to make a run for it? (Brer Rabbit then turns his worried attention toward Brer Fox, while Brer Possum turns over on his back, playing possum.)

Brer Fox: (Approaches the two and takes one look at Brer Possum.) “Looks like Brer Possum is dead. I don’t want to bother with him.” (Brer Fox then turns toward Brer Rabbit, with his back toward Brer Rabbit.)

Brer Possum (Makes faces at Brer Rabbit, but says nothing.)

Brer Rabbit (to Brer Fox) No, Brer Possum ain’t dead. He’s just trying to trick you. Take a look at him!

Brer Fox then turns toward Brer Possum, who immediately goes back into his “possum” routine.

Brer Rabbit takes this opportunity to play dead, just like Brer Possum is.

Brer Fox looks back and forth, at one and then the other, looking rather confused.

Brer Bear: (Starts talking well before he comes into view.) I hear voices. Is that you, Brer Fox? I was just thinking of having you over for dinner!

Brer Fox: Upon hearing this, looks at Brer Possum, then at Brer Rabbit, then looks at the audience, shrugs his shoulders, rolls over on his back, and begins playing “possum” too.

Brer Bear: He arrives on the scene, looks confused at Brer Possum, then Brer Rabbit, then Brer Fox. He looks at the audience, shrugs his shoulders, then leaves.
