The Sassafras Tree

THE CUBMASTER SPEAKS: __________names of boy (s), you are now taking the big step from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting. There is a saying among Boy Scouts that SCOUTING IS OUTING.

You will have many opportunities to get out into the woods and observe nature. I hope you will start with the common sassafras plant. Look at these drawings. They were made by tracing around an actual leaf. All three leaves came from one tiny sassafras tree. The first leaf looks like any ordinary tree leaf doesn't it? The second looks like a hand reaching out to welcome you into the woods. And the third looks like the universal Scout emblem, the Tenderfoot badge, which says to you that SCOUTING IS OUTING.

When you go on your first camping trip, I hope you will look for a sassafras tree and check this out for yourself. Now will you give me the Boy Scout Sign and the Boy Scout Handshake. Good luck to you _______(name of boy (s), and good Scouting.
