Blue door hangers are popping up everywhere this weekend, courtesy of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers and Explorer Scouts. These Scouts are taking part in a program called A National Good Turn; this program helps feed the hungry of America. My area Scouts are hanging the signs this weekend; other areas may have later (or earlier) dates.
Here's how the program works: you place canned goods that you would like to donate in any paper or plastic bag that you already have in your home. You then place the bag outside your front door on the date specified on the door hanger by 9 a.m. and the Scouts will pick up the bag by noon.
The food you donate stays in your community to help feed friends and neighbors in need. You can still donate, even if you didn't get a door hanger. Call your area council office and let them know your address and when you will set out your bag. They will make arrangements with you to pick up the food. Alternatively, you can drop off your donation at your local council office.
Please limit your donations to non-perishable, non-glass food items only.
Here are some examples of good donations:
Canned or dry soup mixes
Canned Baby formula
If you can help in any way, please do so. There are people everywhere who don't get enough to eat but never say a word. This food could end up in your neighbor's kitchen without you even knowing they needed it.
