In memory of Don Robertson

It is with great sadness that I let you know of the passing of my father. Donald L. Robertson October 22, 1950 – February 26, 2015. Don passed away at his home in Dayton Nevada. He was born in Ripon, Wisconsin and moved to Hawthorne, California at a young age. He joined the Air Force in 1971, serving his country for 20 years before retiring as a Master Sargent. He married Alice on May 6, 1972. He is survived by his wife Alice, daughter Kelly, and son Scott. He enjoyed camping, backpacking, travelling and kept busy at home with landscaping the yards. He was a kind, modest and gentle man, the sort of person small children and dogs are drawn to.

Don joined scouting when he was eight years old and it became his passion. He was an Eagle Scout, Bear in WoodBadge, NYLT course director, held numerous Pack, Troop, District and Council positions. Don was a good husband and father, and a great scouter who mentored legions of youth and adult leaders for over 40 years. He started several Troops, brought many more back from the brink of collapse, trained thousands of leaders, and positively affected countless young lives. He will be missed!

As long as the candle

A Scout’s Prayer by Lord Baden-Powell

Our Father, make us Trustworthy, for there are those who trust us.

Make us Loyal, for through loyalty we reach our highest ideals.

Teach us to be Helpful, for through helpfulness do we forget our selfness.

Make us Friendly, for there are so many who need a friend.

Train us in Courtesy, for courtesy is the carpet on life’s floor.

Make us kind for kindness is the oil in the cogs of life’s machinery.

Insist upon our Obedience, for victory comes only to him who obeys.

Make us Cheerful, for cheerfulness is the green grass among the rocks in the path of life.

Train us in Thrift, for thrifty habits brighten our future.

Make us Brave; brave in the dark and brave in the light; but save us from becoming fakers in bravery.

Help us to be Clean – clean in thoughts, in speech, and in deed. And may we remember that our bodies are Thy holy temples, and that any abuse thereof is to tamper with Thy Great Plans.

Above all, O God, help us to be Reverent toward all things which Thou hast made for our enjoyment when we are in Thy great out-of-doors, among the trees, along the streams, and on the Hillsides. May we know it was Thee who made the waters to flow, the trees to reach heavenward, the mountains to endure to all ages.

In all these things we ask that Thou wilt help us. And may we never forget the Scout Oath to which we all have pledged ourselves, so that through Thy help we may live these points of our Scout Law.

Amen

This was written by Don's mother when she was a den leader
and he was a Cub Scout.

Scouter’s Prayer
(For Devine Guidance)
By Mary Jane Robertson

O Father of every nation
Lord of all creation,
Gentle spirit who enters in
Forgive us for our sin
Wise thou art and tender too,
On earth these things are far and few.
We come to thee in prayer tonight
Seeking a way do to what’s right.
Help us, O Lord to do our best,
Help us, O Lord to face each test.
Help us to labor for truth and knowledge
That lights the way to the highest college.
Lend us not in the ways of war,
Lend us not on the path of gore;
Near us Father, this plea we send
To save our planet from a fiery end.
Give us wisdom tried and good,
Give us understanding of brotherhood.
Teach us to love our neighbors here
To over come the unknown fear.
Show us Father, the way to be just
With the children Thou gave to us.
Show us Father, and hand in hand
We’ll walk with them to the Promised Land.
Take away all greed and lust
Replace them with love and trust.
Take away our foolish pride
And guide us safely to Thy side.
Thank Thee Father for clothes and spouse,
Thank Thee Father for food and house.
Thank Thee too for rest and toil,
Thank Thee for air and soil.
O Father of every nation
Lord of all creation,
Before we leave Thy hall
Bless us one and all.
Amen
