Hurricane (or other natural disaster) Survival Kit

By: Posted On: 2011-08-26

With the earthquake we on the East coast had the other day and the tremors we continue to experience, plus hurricane Irene bearing down on us, I think maybe a post on basic survival kits might be prudent. The following article comes from the great Weather Channel and lists things that should be included in a hurricane survival kit.  If you live in an area that will be affected by these storms please take heed and and prepare before a storm hits your area.  It's not a good idea to hope assistance will help you live should you lose everything.  Such assistance can take anywhere from hours to days to weeks to arrive after a major storm; take your own survival to heart.  And to my friends and family out here in the the wake of the storm, my house is open if you need it.  Be safe guys.

Hurricane Survival Kit

Essential Items

During a hurricane, and possibly for days or even weeks afterward, electricity and other utilities might not be available. Debris and/or water might block the roads, preventing vehicles from getting in our out of your neighborhood. Help might not reach you for days after the hurricane, so you’ll need to be completely self-sufficient during that period.

Here are some of the most critical supplies to have on hand, well before a hurricane threatens:

  • At least a 3-day and preferably a 7-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day)
  • Non-perishable food
  • Formula, diapers, and other baby supplies
  • Manual can opener
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription and non-prescription medicines
  • Toiletries
  • Cell phones and battery-powered cell phone chargers
  • Battery-powered radios and flashlights
  • Plenty of batteries
  • Extra cash
  • Blankets, sleeping bags, books, and games (especially if evacuating)
