First Aid

First Aid Instruction

But first, -- Aids in Instructing

No matter how simple an idea or fact ma be the slightest misunderstanding can occur. The following is a classic example.

2 * 2 = 4

2 * 3 = 6

The worst part is that when this problem is ran through a paocket calculator the answer comes out -- "twenty-three".

Additional Points of Consideration

Average students retain only about 10% of what is taught.

(So give 10 items the amount of information needed.)

Phrase any single idea 10 different ways.

(If you expect 10 different students to understand.)

Teach the subject covered by test, don't teach the test.

(The answer to number 10 is false. Why?)

Doing mental crutches and patterns. They're easier to remember than facts.

(A bill in my wallet has a winning poker hand in the number.)

Highlights of First Aid

  • First Aid is not medicine - it is COMMON SENSE
  • AIDS is a judgement call - add gloves to First Aid Kit
  • First Aid is the normalization of the abnormal situation
  • Everything in camp is hot, sharp, heavy, or combination of all of them
  • The only rule in every case is that in every case will be different
  • The most painful wound may not be the most serious
  • Treat anyone involved in any accident for shock
  • Don't damage the patient anymore then he already is
  • For snake bit - DO NOT cut and suck like the old book says
  • The better the training the better the care

First Aid Kits

  • A First Aid Kit is not your bathroom medicine cabinet
  • There is little to no medicine in a First Aid Kit
  • In Scouting - All medicine is handled by the Outing Leader (Usually Scoutmaster)
  • Every Kit is only limited by size, Imagination and Users Training
  • generally a First Aid Kit should include:
  • Thermometer
  • Flashlight
  • Neosporin
  • Bandages
  • Anything you might think you will need
  • If you use something out of your kit, put two back in
  • Don't wait till you need to check to see if you have it
  • When your kit is filled, start looking for a bigger one
  • Combat Rules Apply

(Use his fist aid equipment first, and send him off to the first aid station, and the same

With the next guy and the next, this way you will save you kit if it should be needed.)

Introduction to First Aid Instruction

The Scoutmaster Handbook tells u; "Remember that the skills that save a life or treat a serious injury are nit in a kit. They're in the head of an experienced first-aider. Always take one or more along."

First Aid care is well defined. That is, the care to be given is stated in the Boy Scout Handbook. And the First Aid Merit badge Pamphlet. It follows treatment prescribed by accepted medical authorities and must be followed. What is not covered is how to make it come alive in Scout training. The best way to make first aid come alive is through hands-on experience which will reinforce the retention of the skill. Remember first aid must be remembered to be useful. It could be years before it is put to use in an emergency.

Home Made Makeup

The makeup material for realistic first aid can come from a number of sources. Costume shops, theatrical supply houses, and mortician supply houses are a few that come to mind. Around Halloween makeup is usually less expensive and usually cleans up with soap and water (an advantage if you ask mom).
