When I think about survival, hydration is top of mind. It is fundamental to us as humans, as in over half of our bodies are made up of water. Being dehydrated can lead to serious complications and side effects, with fatigue, headache, and crankiness being some of the first signs. Water allows our bodies to carry out basic chemical reactions and essential functions. That’s why it’s so important to drink lots of water, especially outdoors. But how much should you drink? How often? Men should drink at least 15.5 cups of fluids a day and women should drink 11.5 ......

James Dus, a member of Cub Scout Pack 350 in Evansville, Indiana, has always been a fan of Thor, the Marvel Comics character who has shot into the public consciousness with his appearance in the most recent series of Marvel movies. (The actor who plays Thor in the MCU has an interesting connection to Scouting himself, by the way.) James, his brother William, and his sister Anna have always enjoyed playing with their Mjolnir and Stormbreaker toys, sometimes recreating scenes from the comics and movies, and other times inventing their own. (No doubt they’ve pondered what Thor’s Scouting career could ......

On a rainy Thursday at the 2017 National Jamboree, a Scout approached me and introduced himself. Jackson Rogers, then 15 years old, wanted to tell me about his seemingly impossible goal. He said he was trying to earn every available merit badge — all 138 a Scout could earn at the time. “I told you about this goal, ” Jackson remembers. “You told me that if I ever accomplished this to shoot you an email.” Well, that email arrived last month, accompanied by the picture of Jackson and me from the 2017 Jamboree seen at the top of this post. ......
Guest post from Girl Scout troop leader Tara Foulkrod, originally published on LinkedIn.Many people I talk to seem clearly impressed when I tell them I volunteer with Girl Scouts on a regular basis. Common questions and statements include: “How do you do it?” “Isn’t it difficult to be around that many girls?” “Oh! When are the cookie sales?” “Why?” There’s also the all-too-familiar “I wouldn’t be able to handle that.” Many of these statements arise from the fact that I’m a full-time working mom and also a full-time college student. I get it—it seems like a lot to handle—and some ......

Scouting is about character and leadership. The Scout Oath and Law – our very foundation – call for helpfulness, bravery, common courtesy, and respect among all people. Our values call us to stand up to injustice, as we strive to help other people at all times. The Scouting movement recognizes and celebrates that the attributes that make us different actually draw us together as Scouts, citizens, and human beings. We refuse to accept violence or injustice toward another human being. As Scouts, we recognize that much work remains to be done. We are committed to empathy, compassion, and to meaningfully ......
To complete the requirements for the National Outdoor Award Adventure Segment, a Scout or Venturer must be a proficient swimmer, have some lifesaving skills, complete the mile swim, and spend some time enjoying aquatics adventures such as swimming, paddling, fishing, or scuba diving. There is a center emblem that is presented with the first award and then a segment for each discipline that is completed. The segments are displayed around the center ......

I’d like opinions on how you would vote based on a situation I encountered: Scout turned 18 in Mar, turned his workbook in Feb, completed his project in Dec. His project was to build nesting boxes for wildlife. He did not invite/ask anyone from his troop to help. His proposal said he was going to use his own money, but ended up getting money from his pastor. His workforce consisted of him, his dad and older brother, and two uncles. When asked how he planned and showed leadership he said “I marked lines on the wood and told ......

Just a quick reminder, it would really help us out if you would let your Scouting friends know about us and this newsletter. This BSA camp was one that was recommended to us by our readers. Some of the pictures shown on this web page were also sent in from one of our viewers. Camp Laramie Peak is the 7th oldest Boy Scout Camp in America. Camp Laramie Peak is located on a working ranch. The scenery is amazing and you might get to drive through a herd of buffalo. In 2020, CLP is 100 years old. It has been through many disasters and has come out being a wonderful camp. Despite the age, the camp is up to date. From family-style dining ......

Every bit of history regarding pandemics suggests that this Sept through December will be quite bad for COVID-19 cases. I'm thinking about planning the 2020-2021 scouting year around the likelihood that states will roll back their community meeting restrictions or even if they don't, parents will be too risk-averse to attend indoor pack meetings. Traditionally, our pack would meet once per month and hand our awards. Moving forward, I'd like to replace that pack meeting style with one that is centered around outdoor, social distancing friendly activities that the kids can participate in as a pack. Some complications ......

The Boy Scouts of America today announced a voluntary recall of Cub Scout Outdoor Activity pins that depict a gold animal paw painted on a blue background sold between April 2016 and January 2020. The pins were sold at local Scout Shops, authorized BSA distributors and online at scoutshop.org. About 78, 000 pins are affected although about 12% of the affected units are in inventory and have never been sold or distributed. No injuries have been reported as a result of the affected pins, and the BSA has identified and fixed the problem that led to the recall. The recall was ......

It can be unsettling to come across a snake on a campout, especially a venomous one. Snakebites present a potential danger — about 8, 000 people in the U.S. are bitten by pit vipers and coral snakes every year, while another 37, 000 are bitten by nonvenomous snakes. Deaths are extremely rare, but it’s still best to take steps to avoid a painful bite. The only states without native venomous snakes are Alaska, Rhode Island, Maine and Hawaii. HOW TO PREVENT SNAKE BITES: • Snakes tend to slither away from people, striking when cornered or surprised. If you find one, ......
Try this one-question test when assessing an Eagle Scout project idea: Does it come from the heart? In my experience, Scouts who answer yes stay motivated throughout the demanding process of planning, developing and giving leadership to others as they uplift their community in a meaningful way. Tanner Hyde’s Eagle project fits that test perfectly. His idea, which began with a simple desire to help his sisters fish, blossomed into a kindhearted gesture that helps an entire city. Two years ago, Tanner and his family were enjoying a day at LaPrele Park in Laramie, Wyo. Tanner knew the fishing on ......

I need help with this. We have three AoL scouts who have transitioned to a troop (2 separate troops actually). One evening an Aaronic Priesthood adviser raised his hand and, when I called on him, said: “President, I’m sorry, but I just don’t get the connection between Scouting and the Aaronic Priesthood.” He then paused and added, “I just don’t get how the [pause…] Fingerprinting merit badge has anything ......

With more clubs, student organizations and intramural sports than there are hours in the week, college offers more than enough opportunities for young people to stay involved. As we have continued our involvement and journey in Scouting and while trying to recruit or help other families do the same, I have encountered two very common concerns about Scouting expressed mostly by mothers of young boys or former Scout moms. These two concerns might very well have been expressed like this: “I’m OK with my son doing Scouting, but I don’t want to have to hound him constantly to get things done or passed ......

A few years ago, 22, 000 Britons registering to access a free Wi-Fi hotspot neglected to read the fine print before clicking “OK.” They didn’t realize they had each agreed to 1, 000 hours of community service, including cleaning toilets, scraping gum off the streets and (eww) clearing sewer blockages. The prank, devised by a British internet company, was meant to remind everyone that it’s smart to read the fine print. This Friendship Questionnaire is a great way to gain information about a student's social skills. It can be used in classroom lessons, small groups, or individually. I use it as a pre-test in my small social skills groups to identify which skills I need to target the most, and follow up with the post-test at the end to make sure that those skills were learned....

By chance has anyone seen any Luis Alvarez Supernova awards at their local scout shops recently? I would cover cost and shipping to get one. We have a scout eagerly awaiting this for a June event. Calling our state store and some regional ones has been unsuccessful. Called national today and they seemed optimistic but not super confident they would have them in stock by then. submitted by /u/yaguy123 [link] [comments]...

Greetings Scout Leaders, do you find it challenging to develop great questions for the Board Of Reviews? For those of you who do not know, a Board of Review happens when a Boy Scout has completed all the requirements for a rank. The board members ask various questions to ensure that Scout is ready. If the board passes the Scout, then they earn that rank, else they may have something they need to work on and will appear before the board again at a later date.
Remember, the goal of the board, above all, is, is to evaluate the health of the unit. How is the overall spirit/soul of the unit? Are there areas the unit could be doing better? Where is the unit doing well? What do the scouts think of how the unit is doing?
Keep in mind many of the questions, as phrased below, are probably more for higher ranks. So use your best judgment on what questions are appropriate for the scout before you.
It is common for board members to ask questions like tie this knot or tell me about an experience you had on a campout. But what about questions that require more thought?
So here are some questions...
If you were asked to remove two points from the scout law and replace them with two new words, what would they be and why?
Tell us about something that went wrong on a recent activity, what did you learn from it and what can be done differently next time?
What is your least favorite thing about Scouting & why?
Can you tell me about how you recently demonstrated Scout Spirit at school?
What does Reverent mean to you?
What is your favorite subject at school & why?
Is there an activity you wish the troop would do but has not and why?
Tell us about your favorite service project you have done since you were a scout? What makes it so special?
With that, please take a few quick moments to fill out our survey to help us have a better idea on how we can continue to improve InsaneScouter and what might be the most useful to you.

(From "Patches and Pins..." by Mike Walton (c) 1994. )When I was growing up in Rose Terrace, just about everyone did car washes to raise money for some organization or another. Morgan Phillips was a shy 14-year-old when she attended her first Venturing meeting. She left that meeting unconvinced that Scouting was for her. But her dad encouraged her to keep at it, providing that gentle nudge all teenagers eventually need. Morgan’s glad he did, because she says Scouting helped her build confidence to try things beyond her comfort zone. In the five years since, she has performed songs and silly skits at crowded campfires, given speeches to large groups of adults, and taught classes to other Scouts and Venturers. “None of these are things I thought I would be doing ......

Some of the most indelible non-Scouting memories from my childhood are of watching Jeopardy! with my parents. This wasn’t entertainment; it was competition. After school, we’d fire up the VCR to watch the latest episode as a family. I’d grab a yellow legal pad and pen from my dad’s desk, sit down cross-legged and scoot as close to the TV as I could before pushing play on the remote. Win or lose, we were keeping score. My love of Jeopardy! has continued into adulthood, and I join fans around the world who were heartbroken to learn that Alex Trebek died ......

There are many of us who are in Scouting today because of the encouragement of caring parents. Thank you for doing your best to make Scouting a success in your Pack, Troop or Crew. Thank you! Dear Andy, Our troop is having a recurring problem resulting from “poor language choices.†Last week, the dad of a family new to our community contacted me about getting his boys involved in Scouting. I let him know when and where for our troop’s next meeting. I was out of town that day, but both of my assistants and several parents were attending. The Scouts had set up a meeting at a local park to do a map and compass activity by patrols. My ASMs reported that the turnout was good and that a number of parents had attended as ......
The research is clear: outdoor experiences like the ones Girl Scouts offers most definitely foster leadership skills in girls. At Girl Scouts, girls get the chance to experience the great outdoors and all the wonder and adventure it entails. Spending time in the outdoors is a cornerstone of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and has been since Girl Scouts’ inception. Our all-girl environment and proven programming show girls the benefits of spending time in the world beyond walls in ways that encourage them to take healthy risks and overcome their fears. Girls are forces of nature! They are resilient, curious, ......
Scout Rank is the first rank earned by a young man or woman upon joining a Scouts BSA troop. “Nowhere is the line between good and bad or right and wrong drawn more distinctly than in the question of the sanitary facilities of a camp.†—From Camp Sanitation, Boy Scouts of America, 1928 Scouts have been talking about keeping their campsites clean for a long time and it is not just that we like neatness; it promotes good health and safety. And some of the same things we do when camping can keep us well in an emergency. Take water, for example, we turn on our taps and clean drinking water is available, ......
