SM Tip - From the Sports Page to the Scoutmaster Minute, Part 2

By: Posted On: 2013-06-26

My previous tip talked about finding Scoutmaster minutes in the sports section of your daily newspaper. Of course, any sportscast on TV is probably good for one or two Scoutmaster minutes, as are shows like ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Another great resource is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which posts sports-themed devotionals at http://fcaresources.com/devotional. One I read recently talked about women’s basketball star Maya Moore’s humility; another addressed the time swimmer Michael Phelps was photographed smoking marijuana.

Given the source, the FCA devotionals necessarily have a Christian theme, which may not work for you or your Scouts. That really doesn’t matter, however, because you should just use the anecdotes in the devotionals as fodder for the Scoutmaster minutes you write.

One other note: most sports stories have pretty short shelf lives. The Phelps story I mentioned above happened in 2009—when some of your Boy Scouts were probably Wolf Cub Scouts.

Caveats aside, however, I think you’ll find the site worth visiting the next time you’re struggling to come up with a meaningful Scoutmaster minute.
