Would you ask:

  • Should Scouting be co-ed? Should it be boys only?
  • Should there be an advancement program or not?
  • Should it be youth ran?
  • At what age should a kid be able to join Scouts?
  • How could we make Scouting better?

Maybe what I would ask is “Do you feel that Scouting has lost its directions, its way in worrying about how the community perceives it and how to get more youth to join that it has lost touch with its roots?”

What would you ask?

If You Could Ask Baden Powell Anything
@Paula Hrbacek on 03/31/2011
I don't want to get girls into Boy Scouts, but I would like to get the Boy Scout leadership methods back into Girl Scouts. Twice as many boys make Eagle as girls make Gold, the equivilent. Their summer camps don't run badges, but just offer "fun". The program has been watered down so much to keep everyone happy that very few leaders actually know what kind of program to run. I didn't understand how to run it until one day at the "hut" I was looking at the BS advancement chart, and suddenly realized that a "sign" in GS is equal to a "rank" in the boys. At camping training, the President of our GS Council told us in all earnesty "Camp Kolomoki is primitive camping. The bedrooms aren't air conditioned, and the TV doesn't have cable." Granted, the girls don't enjoy peeing in the woods as much as the boys do, and the boys aren't interested in dancing and singing as much as the girls are, and that is why the programs should be seperate. My husband had a lot of quality time with our sons, and I had a lot of quality time with our daughter. I don't want to change that. I would just like to see a little more focus on running a quality program that works on accomplishments, and a little less time selling cookies.
