A boy scout at heart, always and forever.
The program taught him social and character development.
The young boy was timid and did not know what it would be like.
He learned to be a part of a team and value the importance of his teachings.
The teachings were of citizenship, outdoors, education, survival, fitness, and leadership. The young scout learned the laws and oaths of the organization and vowed to live by those words.
"Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind,
Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."
In time, his confidence and abilities expanded. All the things he had learned became more valuable.
The boy grew to love his after school activities and the weekend camp outs. And, to be able to congregate with others boys that like him, were just learning their place in life. Through his academics, he continued with Scouting and found he could not live without it. The scout kept striving for others to believe in him, he struggled to find ways to believe in his own self. His determination to succeed and get achievements whether in badges, rankings, or any recognition that was important to him. The way people viewed him was important, but was not a deciding factor in his successes. He inserted his values and traditions on others and later classmates joined.
The scout was elated each level he accomplished knowing something new was to come.
Like the army, in Scouting there is structure, order, and rules to follow. One is expected to follow it and be there for your fellow scout with dignity and honor. The scout had now accepted all of what he was taught. Exhibiting courage, pride, self-worth, and his purpose of being, he completed his teachings and went on to lead other kids.
Offering the foundation, structure, knowledge, and the goodwill to others he found beneficial. Today, as an adult he recognizes the worth and purpose in staying committed to something. Undoubtedly, the most valuable and memorable life experiences he could ever have. Through Scouting, this one scout experienced a community that changed the course of his life forever.
