Lawsuit: Boy Scouts ignored warnings about Washington scoutmaster
News 10 Dec 2013 | 11:17 pm
A lawsuit filed Tuesday against the Boy Scouts of America charges that the organization failed to take action against a Washington state volunteer despite receiving multiple complaints about him. Brian Malnes, 48, alleges he was abused by a scout leader in 1980. He chose to file suit 30 years later only after he saw his alleged abuser profiled on a news report in 2012. The news story focused on ......

Do your Youth Protection Training online, they tell us. Take your position specific training through the website, the council promotes. You should be doing your troop advancement through the internet, not through paperwork, I am told.
How the hell am I suppose to do anything online through MyScouting.org when the website does not even recognize me?
I have been a registered adult leader with the B.S.A. through Boy Scout Troop 68 for over 33 years. I am also on roundtable staff and a member of the Cub Pack committee. I once was able to use the myscouting.org website without a problem. Then...

I recently attended our council’s annual Eagle Scout recognition dinner—a very nice, semi-formal event to recognize this year’s “class” of Eagle Scouts, their parents and Scoutmasters. It’s also a big fund-raiser for the council. As an Eagle Scout from this council, I attend most every year to connect with Scouting friends and help with the fundraising.
This year, I noticed many Eagle Scouts wearing their uniform improperly. Examples include the Eagle medal pinned to the right shirt pocket, wearing OA sashes (this isn’t an OA event and they’re not there representing the OA), wearing their merit badge sash over the...

Tuesday Talkback: How do you organize belt loops, pins, other recognition items?
Blog 10 Dec 2013 | 8:22 am
When Cubmaster Lee inherited the position earlier this year, he was pumped to make an even bigger difference in the lives of youth.
That is, until he saw the shape of his pack’s advancement and award collection.
“I inherited multiple plastic bags full of belt loops and pins in no particular order,” he writes. “I’d love to know if others have found some great organizational folders, cabinets, etc. to keep things together.”
Great question, Lee, and it’s one that applies to Boy Scout leaders, as well. Certainly there’s a better solution than a mess of zip-top bags.
Today’s Tuesday Talkback topic is a simple one:...

PINEWOOD DERBY MEMORYSaved by the GlueThis year, Ryan and I built a pinewood derby car that, by design, had two pieces: a front section and a rear section that were connected by telescoping aluminum tubing. This telescoping aluminum tubing allowed us to adjust the wheel alignment precisely. Then, to hold it in place, two temporary turnbuckles were attached to each side, allowing us to roll it down a long smooth surface, observe the direction it turned and then correct it quickly and easily by adjusting the turnbuckles. Once it was going as straight as we liked,...
