I've posted my trail journal, photos, and map from my short Appalachian Trail excursion. You can review it all at AT Hike page.I've been out walking 4 to 8 miles on the local trail this past week to keep my knee moving. Take Your Scouts to Kandersteg in 2015
Blog     29 Aug 2014 | 8:06 am
The natural beauty of Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland, along with the fellowship of a mini world jamboree awaits you and your Scouts in Kandersteg next summer. I’ve successfully provided the opportunity for my Scouts to take advantage this incredible experience (see the videos of our 2014 trip here), and I’d like to host your group in 2015! To do just that I’ve tentatively secured accommodations in Kandersteg at the Villa Foree, a hostel directly adjacent to the Scout Center visited by Scouts from all over the world, for two weeks during late June and early July of 2015. To make this idea viable a minimum number of participants must make a commitment...

First Aid Troop Program Feature for Boy Scouts
Blog     29 Aug 2014 | 8:00 am
BSA provides the troop program feature guides as a resource for Boy Scout troops. A PLC can use these guides to plan a series of meetings and outings around a single theme. My post Troop Program Features for Meetings and Outings has  more information about these guides. The plans for the First Aid troop program feature can be found in  Volume 2  of Troop Program Features from BSA: Having agreed to live by the Scout Oath, Scouts pledge themselves to help other people at all times. Often, all that takes is an observant eye to spot a person in need of assistance, and then the kindness to lend...

Spotted in Scouting magazine: Merit badge sashes worn on belts
Blog     29 Aug 2014 | 6:00 am
“A merit badge sash is never worn on the belt.” It’s right there on Page 31 of the Guide to Awards and Insignia. The word “never” is even italicized and everything. Coincidentally, Page 31 of the September-October 2014 issue of Scouting magazine is where you’ll find a group of Scouts wearing — you guessed it — merit badge sashes on their belts. Two of the Scouts in the photo wear an OA sash and a merit badge sash, also a no-no according to Page 31 of the Guide. So what gives? Over the past two weeks, we’ve heard from more than a dozen Scouters who noticed the uniforming mix-up and wanted to contact us. Here’s a...

Following on from the Belgian music festival last week, Oppikoppi is the largest music festival in South Africa, held annually on Northam Farm.1st Northam built this tower for the 2014 festival, and the five minute time lapse by Donald van der Westhuizen shows how it was built.
