For a long time now I've had intentions of filming some short beginner videos to help coach up some of the new collectors in the hobby. Not surprisingly this has remained on my to-do list for more than a year now. So I finally got the idea that Brad England and I can include that as a segment in our Thread Heads show. Hopefully the episode that comes out this week will include that and I'm looking for some ideas. For starters I'm going to review the list of items that are on the ISCA website. I believe Warren Kuhfeld helped...

I have a new episode of Thread Heads loaded up in this issue. This one is an interview with Doug Chambers who is known as the "pin guy" around these parts. In the interview Doug shares how he got turned onto hat pins and how he has discovered it to be an inexpensive and fun hobby. My Girl Scouts are doing a very rare thing this summer - they are going to troop camp. I say rare because the vast majority of Girl Scouts attend summer camp as individuals. However, my wife and some other female leaders are taking a large...

Having just come off two weekends of patch trading I'm still buzzing from all the fun. I spent yesterday sorting what I brought home only to found out that I did miss out on a few patches that were issued during the weekend. But since I quit collecting all the new issues a few years back I went to bed last night without a worry. Judging from my own sales and watching Facebook I think there are a fair number of people who have not given up on new issues but instead are determined to collect centennial OA issues. I know...

For the second weekend in a row I am putting the finishing touches on an issue of the Hot Finds from a Waffle House coming back from a conclave. Life is good! This weekend I was the guest of Catawba Lodge 459 as they hosted the SR5 Dixie Fellowship (conclave) near Charlotte, NC. I'll share some thoughts that came from conversations I had with collectors. I had a nice chat with Chris Jensen about how the fundraising patch era is choking off good old fashioned trading. Chris literally broke out a bag of old Dixie Fellowship patches from his inventory rather...

I published two fun videos in the days since the last issue of the Hot Finds Newsletter.  The first was a video of the patch trading frenzy at the SR7B Conclave I attended.  It's making the rounds on Facebook and has been viewed close to 1000 times.  Then on Thursday Brad England and I got on a Google Hangout on Air and recorded another episode of Thread Heads.  I've got that one linked in below. I've recorded some interview style episodes of Thread Heads and I still have another one of those ready to publish next week. Episode #8 will be...
